All five are alive.

Our baby chicks arrived this week!  Five various breeds (Speckled Sussex, Light Brahma, Golden Laced Wyandotte and 2 Easter Eggers).  Of course, they are just so adorable. I was happy to see that they all arrived safe and sound. They are currently cheeping away in our storage room - lots of eating, sleeping and poo-ing going on in that bin.  Tom is finishing up the coop, but they will be indoors for another month or so.

Ellie is very jealous of my time spent gazing into the plastic bin. It's made her a bit more animated and in-your-face, which is a good thing. We are unsure if she wants to mother or taste them. My bet is on the mothering.

Here's a short video of our crew...

Nothing much.

Just some random pictures from the past few weeks!

My cousin Mike giving me tractor driving 101 lessons. We needed to get it started last weekend when I was in Ohio. Success!

Visiting my uncle Wayne with Sherry and cousin Dawn.

I've started Ellie Mae on her trail running career. She's a natural!  This was after a run, heading home nice and tired. And smiling!

The girls arrive this week and their temporary baby chick home is ready!  A steady 95 degrees and all. Cheep, cheep.

Foster failures...and proud of it.

Our plan was to foster.  Our plan still is to foster, but maybe with a permanent dog in residence too.  Yes, our first foster failure was our first foster dog after Lucy's passing.  We meant to take some time off from a "full-time" dog, to just "marathon foster" for a while, one after the other.  Plans change.

Our first foster from Foothills Animal Shelter (http://foothillsanimalshelter.org/) was "Little Bit".  She is a pittie, of course.  Brown and white, just like little Lucy Lu.  One polka-dotted ear, one brown ear, just like Lucy Lu.  Was it meant to be?  I don't think the ears alone would've gotten us, but...man, her personality is too cute.  She was surrendered about a year ago, having recently had puppies and with a not-so-nice "husband".  Her coat and skin was in bad shape and they immediately put her on different (better) food to combat her allergies.  It worked - she was adopted and went home with a family, but unfortunately it didn't work out.  She came back with similar skin issues (probably from cheap food with chicken or some other trigger), all red, itchy and yeasty.  Enter "us".  We were happy to foster her until her forever home came along.  Well, it turns out that forever home is ours.  She needs love, stability and, well, love. She knows no words ("walk", "treat", etc.), probably a sign of little human training and interaction.  She's had a hard life of 5 years, been bounced around way too much but somehow has developed a wonderful personality.  Amazing.  She deserves a home.

Her name is now "Ellie Mae" and she is all sugar and sweetness.  She has this endearing habit of bringing you an offering at important times - like welcoming you home, or if Tom brings her home and I'm already there, she grabs something to bring you.  This also happens when she has to go outside (now that she knows the dog door, this isn't as common), when she's hungry, when you wake up in the AM, or basically when she wants something.  What does she bring, you may ask?  Mostly a stuffed toy.  But, in a pinch, she'll grab a blade of long decorative grass from the yard, a winter hat, sock from the laundry basket, a stick, etc.  You get the picture...actually the picture is below.

A toy offering.

A grass offering.

Needless to say, she stole our hearts.  We ordered her collar this week. Collars are lifetime members in our house...it's a right of passage, it means you get to stay.  The collar is called "Raccoon in the Forest", from a shop on Etsy.comhttps://www.etsy.com/shop/WoofCoutureInt?ref=l2-shopheader-name.

Lucy's spirit is still strong in our hearts & home and always will be. But Ellie needs us. Lucy, I hope you understand.

Girls @ Mary Jane

Had a great girls ski day at Winter Park (mostly Mary Jane) this weekend. Sun and temps were warm, snow was pretty darn good, Tio Ron can't be beat and the company never better!

The Butte.

Crested Butte, that is. We got away for a long weekend with friends. A bit sparse in the snow but awesome to see new territory. And who can complain with a view like this?!

Lucy.

A few weeks ago, Tom and I lost our faithful companion, part of our family, our dear Lucy girl. She was a wonderful 14 years old and we miss her dearly. She was playful and active to the end, even with advanced arthritis. She was with us almost as long as we've been with each other, so long I don't remember being without her, or know how to be without her.

In short, she was perfect.

I plan to post a longer entry about her adventure filled life with many pictures and things we will always remember about her as soon as I can compile all those memories without breaking down repeatedly.

Run like the wind, Lucy Lu, Looba Rooba, Miss Lucy.  We will see you again someday. I'm sure of it.

Home again.

For our last morning in Bonaire, we settled on a mountain bike ride along the wild east coast instead of hiking.  The waves there are huge with turbulent, swirling waters all along a very rocky coast.  Our ultimate goal was to find Indian inscriptions, but instead, we found ourselves off trail and riding over coral and rock toward a lighthouse set beside decrepit ruins we assumed to be the lighthouse keepers house from years long past. We saw only a couple of local fishermen on this ride. Not one tourist. So peaceful.

After we loaded the bikes back up in our truck, we went to find lunch, checkout and head to the airport. We arrived back in Denver late on Saturday, just in time to welcome snow on Sunday. Pictures from our morning ride are below.

Looking back on our week on the island...we are glad we got certified to scuba dive, but we feel that it took two days off of our vacation. The last night at dinner, we both said we felt like we wanted two more days on Bonaire. Of course, we are both partial to 2+ week vacations. And who wants a vacation to end!?  But scuba definitely sucked up some of our exploration time. We would have done additional hiking, biking and windsurfing with two more days. And probably would've headed back over on a kayak to Klein Bonaire with those curious French Angelfish. All in all, a great week on a beautiful breezy island.

Most visitors to Bonaire go to dive. A lot. The reefs and sea life are incredible, the water is clear and calm, so I don't blame them. But they spend the majority of their time underwater, getting ready to be underwater or coming back from being underwater. I want to say to those people...EXPLORE BONAIRE ABOVE WATER!  Drive into Rincon and have lunch with locals, hike or drive in the national park or along the deserted east coast, visit the donkeys - basically leave the resort side of the island and explore the rest of it. It's beautiful. The people are trying to hold onto their culture in the face of Dutch control, and with more and more Dutch expats, it's challenging, but they are doing it. They are welcoming, warm and genuine. Experience island life above the water.

Inside the house

Some of the islands 300ish wild donkeys. Many are in the sanctuary, but they estimate 300 wild with 200 of those sterilized.
